Carriers charge on whichever is larger: the actual weight, or the volumetric (dimensional) weight calculated from the carton size. Bulky-but-light goods are often priced on volume.
What goes into the price
- Chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (CBM).
- Route — air, sea, or rail, each with different rates and timelines.
- Fuel and handling — surcharges that vary by carrier and period.
- Consolidation — combining items into one package can reduce the total.
Freight rates and delivery times are estimates and change with route, season, and carrier. The final amount firms up after goods are received and packed.
