UK import rules turn on a £135 consignment value line. A low 1688 price is only the first number — here is what decides your real UK landed cost.
- £135 is the key consignment threshold
- For goods worth £135 or less (non-excise) bought from outside the UK, import VAT is normally collected at the point of sale and included in the price. Above £135, Customs Duty can apply and VAT is handled on import. Gifts up to £39 are treated differently.
- VAT and Customs Duty are separate lines
- Import VAT (standard 20%), Customs Duty (commodity-code dependent, only above £135 for non-excise goods), and carrier handling fees are charged separately. Check the UK Trade Tariff for your commodity code.
- Clearing customs is not permission to sell

Do I pay VAT on 1688 goods coming into the UK?
Usually yes. For consignments of £135 or less, import VAT is normally collected at the point of sale; above £135, VAT is handled on import and Customs Duty may also apply. Check GOV.UK for current treatment.
When does UK Customs Duty apply?
For non-excise goods, Customs Duty generally applies when the consignment is worth more than £135, and the rate depends on the commodity code. Use the UK Trade Tariff to look it up.
Can I sell 1688 products on Shopify or Amazon UK?
Often yes, but compare landed cost and compliance, not just item price. UKCA/CE marking and product-safety rules apply; 1688 listings do not prove compliance.
What is the £39 figure I keep seeing?
Gifts sent between private individuals worth £39 or less can be exempt from import VAT. Commercial goods you buy for resale do not qualify as gifts.
What happens if the product is restricted or needs specialist compliance advice?

What evidence do I receive after goods reach the China warehouse?
When receiving and photo evidence are included in your approved quote, you receive dated photos of the visible cartons, labels, and contents before the next handoff. Those photos do not by themselves prove product performance, full compliance, or defect-free goods; deeper inspection is a separate approved scope.
Does Supplymo buy immediately after I submit a product?
No. Submission starts a check only. A supplier purchase can begin only after a written quote is prepared and explicitly approved.
Can the workflow stop after the first check?
Yes. The result may recommend a sample, more information, manual review, a different route, or stopping before payment.
